ACEA Legislative & Public Policy Work. The Alabama Christian Education Association Legislative Involvement
|
For almost 50 years the ACEA Executive Director has been the ONLY Christian school lobbyist representing the interests of Christian schools and church/Christian daycares before the Alabama Legislature as well as other state agencies. The efforts of ACEA in the early 1980s led to the passing of laws exempting church daycares from state regulation and licensure and church schools from being regulated by the Alabama State Department of Education. ACEA continues to be the "watch dog" and on several occasions over the years laws have been introduced to regulate and control Christian schools and church daycares.
In 1999 ACEA worked hard to make sure that the Alabama Child Protection Act requiring criminal background checks for teachers would not unduly burden churches as the original proposal would have done.
ACEA played a key role in drafting and passing the Alabama Accountability Act (AAA) in 2013 and successfully amending it in 2014. This law makes provision for students in priority low performing public schools to receive a tax-credit scholarship to attend a non-public participating school.
Most recently ACEA was a leader in helping draft and pass the school choice bill Creating Hope and Opportunity for our Students' Education, that was signed by Governor Ivey in March 2024. Working with bill sponsors and leaders of other non-public school organizations as well as the governor's office, a good bill that will offer up to $7,000 to be used by participating students to attend the participating non-public school of their choice will be universally applied in 2027.
Additionally, ACEA is a state member of the American Association of Christian Schools (AACS), which owns buildings with offices in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Washington, D.C. and employs a government relations director as well as an expert policy analyst along with their talented assistants.
The flow of information our schools get on a consistent basis is second to none. Our presence and connections have consistently provided us with up-to-date information on many issues such as the Covid pandemic, thus keeping our schools on the cutting edge of useful information.
ACEA proudly works with many conservative, pro-family organizations in Alabama. These groups add strength to our organization as we stand together supporting public policy that is godly, pro-family, and pro-Christian education.
Our method of joining with these other groups fulfills our slogan: "Working Together to Better Serve."
